Ayano Aishi - a 20-year-old girl whose upbringing was defined by tales of a genetic illness in her family, one that has caused every ancestor before her to feel no emotion lest they meet their ‘soulmate’. One particular person out in the world that they shall fall in love with, and only truly feel emotions when in close proximity to this person. Believing in such, she grew up with a disconnect from her peers, always feeling like there was an impossibly thick glass wall cutting her off from the outside world. Never truly feeling a sense of belonging, doomed to simply watch others have what she cannot. Fulfillment.
As such, she follows her mother’s every word and action, as though the life her mother had led before her were gospel, though always fell short. Her mother held perfect grades in school, Ayano always held near-perfect ones. Her mother was friends with everybody, Ayano was known by everybody. Her mother was on the student council, Ayano was part of the newspaper committee. Her mother found her soulmate, and Ayano…was 20 years old with no one to call her own. Watching her peers date and fall in love, see news of those she lost contact with after high school get engaged and married, or even have kids.
Then, after a couple years of hard work, odd jobs, and a few entrance exams, Ayano manages to at least succeed in something. Shiradou Academy, a post-secondary institution that only the greatest in the country could manage to get into. The same academy her mother went to. Maybe she’d have better luck here?
"How To Be Human" is a personal rewrite of the 2014/Unfinished game 'Yandere Simulator', created out of nostalgia for the original game - having followed the development since around 2016 or so - but distaste for both some of the gameplay elements, as well as the original creator of the game. This rewrite isn't a "I could do it better" Spite-Based project [even though making it better isn't exactly difficult], but rather, just a peronal, for-fun rewrite I work on from time to time, made up of different themes I personally enjoy, such as struggles with identity, accepting oneself, and overcoming mental health issues.
As such, "How To Be Human" will cover topics such as various mental health disorders [Depression, C-PTSD, BPD, Anxiety, etc.], Identity Struggles/Acceptance, Death [both Homicide and Suicide], Self Harm, Bullying, Queer/LGBT+ Topics/Characters, Various Forms of Abuse [Physical, Emotional, Psychological, Sexual, etc.] and Manipulation, alongside other potential topics not mentioned here. This should go without saying, but any heavier topics mentioned here are not being glorified or romanticized like in the original game, and are instead focused on either the healing process, or the affects of things such as childhood abuse, with both positive [ie healing and finding acceptance in your community] and negative [being driven to rash actions, such as murder or suicide] results.
And yes, the irony/oddness of queer themes being included in with Everything Else is not lost on me. However, this rewrite focuses heavily on the acceptance of one's identity, including in a queer aspect, so it's been included in with other heavily included topics.
As well, all characters have been aged up to be in college/university, ranging from 19-23, and the rewrite treats them as such.
